Curly Girl Method Week 3

Second Day hair
I'm still doing the CG method and I'm still loving it. It's the start of week 4 and my hair care has never been this easy EVER! My curls are ultra defined....there are few spots in my crown area that are frizzier than the rest that I have to remember to add more conditioner to but other than that, I love it. I'm also getting second day hair...well I still have to wet it in the shower but I just add a dollop of conditioner to my whole head of hair instead of adding conditioner section by section. The result is a quasi-defined WnG which I still love.

Regarding products, I really haven't changed anything. I still love the AO White Camilia conditioner. That's what I still leave in. I dabbled into gels and my hair does not like gels. I bought the Jane Carter Curl Defining Cream and it did absolutely nothing for my curls. So, it is going back to sender because it was like 30 bucks umm...no bueno! I've also been swimming quite a bit so I will write a post on hair care while swimming.

I took the plunge and ordered two book today as I want to have a hard copy reference for when my hair starts growing out. The first book is the Curly Girl: The Handbook by Lorraine Massey and the second is Curly Like Me: How to Grow Your Hair Healthy, Long, and Strong (that's a mouthful) by Teri LaFlesh. I think they will be really good resources to make sure I have something to refer to when my hair starts getting longer and potentially harder to manage.

I think that's it for now. Until later....<3 from me. Has anyone been doing the CG method? How has it been like for you?

  1. Hi there, I am taking the CGM plunge also. I am currently using Kinky Kurly's Knot today and Curling custard. They are awesome products, but pricy so eventually they will be ditched, especially on my current budget. Then, I use a combination of tresemme naturals, flax gel and oils (on dry hair to loosen crunch) over the next 6 days. I have not taken the economical plunge to purchase those two books you referenced, however, they both look like excellent resources. I am praying about making those purchases and look forward to hearing your experiences with them.

  2. I just found your blog through a post on BGLH! I've been doing the CG method for about a month now and I love it. I'm using Tresemme Naturals conditioner for cleansing and as my leave-in. And then running some KCCC through my hair for my gel. (When I use that all up, I'll switch to something cheaper) It has greatly cut done on my styling time and I love that. I was rewetting and redoing my hair every morning, but just this morning, I was in a hurry, so I just added more conditioner to my hair before I got in the shower. I didn't put my head under the water but let it get sprayed as I bathed. Then I I ran my wet hands through it and added the gel. Great definition all day.

I highly recommend Lorraine Massey's book. I read the first edition years ago when I first went natural, but had forgotten about it.

    1. Thanks for visiting ma'am. Very much appreciated. Yup, I love the CG method and as you said, hair care has been the easiest ever. My books came in the mail yesterday and I can't wait to read it cover to cover!

  3. I just stumbled on your blog while doing a cg method google search....I really really want to do this cg method, but I am not sure I'm following it correctly....my biggest problem is that my hair dries white, no matter how little conditioner I use, or how much water I leave dripping in my hair...not to mention it takes FOREVER for my hair to dry. Any suggestions ? Today I used KCNT as my leave in and KCCC as my gel...I've been at this for 3 weeks now, and just not certain what I'm doing LOL
I have a mixture of curls, mostly fractal, lots of corkscrews, some large, some tiny...love my hair though, just want to get this method together. Thanks for any help I can get

    1. Hi Laura, I know exacatly what you mean about the white residue. Are you using the same conditioner even though you are trying different methods? The reason I asked is because I really wanted the Tressemme Naturals to work for me because it is inexpensive and easily accessible but it would always leave the white residue. I use the Aubery Organics White Camilla because it goes on smoother and it dries clear. Not to say you have to use that same one but changing conditioners might be something to consider. Gel also leaves the white residue in my hair.

Another thing is that I rinse out about 50% of the conditioner while in the shower. So I apply it section by section, shake my head and then I run my hair under the shower head for about 10 seconds and do a final shake. That way, you don't see any conditioner in my hair. It really works.

To help with your drying, have you tried plopping? When I get out of the shower, I wrap my hair in a t-shirt makaing sure not to agitate my curls and use a hair tie to secure the t-shairt. When I take it off in about 30 minutes, my hair is no longer dripping and though not dry, I can go out of the house without feeling that I have wet hair. HTH..if you have any other questions, please let me know :)

    2. Thanks ChysC, actually, I don't always use the same conditioner, but I will take that into consideration. I have tried the Tressemme, I didn't really like the way my hair felt if I used it as a leave in, so I may just cowash with it. I will try the Aubrey Organics if it's at my whole foods, for now, I will stick with the KCNT until I find some Aubrey.
I wlll try rinsing more of the conditioner out, I did plop this morning, and I noticed a little difference. I just have white/dull looking hair on my canopy :(
I'll keep trying though, I"m determined for this CG Method to be my method. ::))
THanks so much for replying to my comment, you have no idea how special it made me feel.
BTW, my hair is about the length of yours in the avatar pic....30 mins of wrapping your hair in a tshirt didn't crush your curls ? I will have to try that too !!

  4. I'm happy to have replied. I make sure not to wrap my hair tight. Which is why I use the hair tie to tie it. If I use tie the t-shirt itself, it become way too tight.

I shake my head one more time to seperate the curls further when I take off the t-shirt. Let me know how it goes and whether you find the AO. Don't give up on the CG method, keep trying becuase I know how so much easier it's made my hair care.

    1. Well ChysC......I tried it again today :)
I used LESS conditioner and MORE water and I will admit, it looks much much better. I am so happy....I did find some AO, but I haven't used it yet, trying to use of some of my stash, you know how it goes ....yes, I am a product junkie...LOL
Anyway, I am going to keep at it, thanks again for your help and advice. God Bless !!

    2. Well, I must say I'm happy it's working. Some weeks might be better than others but sticking to it we must right? :)

  5. What is your nighttime routine? I've just been tying mine loosely with a silk scarf. Do you just sleep on your hair? If so, do you find it to be more tangled in the am?

    1. My nightime routine depends on whether I want 2nd day hair or not. If I don't want second day hair, I will just put on a bonnet and go to bed. If I do want to just mist my hair in the morning, I will put my hair in three pineapples before putting on my bonnet. That way, when I wake up in the morning, my hair is not plastered to my scalp. Regarding tangles, I don't really run my fingers through my hair just on the day of the week that I detangle. So, no I don't notice much tangles. HTH Thanks for stopping by :)

  6. Hi! I have been trying the curly girl method for about 4 weeks well this is my 5th week and I cannot get second day hair. My hair is so dry by the end of the day but still soft now, at first it was dry and brittle. So I guess it's starting to work?? My question is do you think I need to fully wet my hair everyday until it gets fully hydrated? I have been trying to get second day hair maybe my hair is not ready, what do you think? I've also been doing my wash n go at night should I do it in the morning, do you think that will help. Your hair looks great by the way!! I'm trying not to give up. :o)

    1. Hiya, thanks for the awesome compliment. I heard naptural85 say this once...if your hair is dry by the end of the day, it's okay just spritz it with some water at night and it will be fine.

That really stuck with me cuz I sometimes freak out when by the end of the day, it seemed as though my hair is dry. Which is where wetting it in the morning works out cuz I remind my self that my hair will get moisturized in the shower the very next morning.

I don't think you neccessarily have to saturate your hair every morning. Second day hair might mean going to bed with your hair in a pineapple or mini pineapples, waking up in the morning, spritz it with some water till it's damp, and applying about a quater sized amount of condish all over (not in sections) and then shaking your head. That is what I consider second day hair.

I have a friend who does her wng at night and it seems to work for her. I say try both and see which is more convinient for you. If you want to try to go beyond second day hair, you might need to add gel use and reactivate it each am with water. HTH please let me know how it goes.
